Murrieta Girl Scouts Plant Seeds in the Community

Daisy Girl Scout Troop 1380 of Murrieta's Cole Canyon Elementary planted carrots in Produce for People, Murrieta's community garden.

Tucked away in a corner of sits Produce for People, Murrieta's community garden.

The garden is overseen by the City of Murrieta. Food cultivated in the garden goes to area food pantries and to the Murrieta Senior Center. Each season, one of the food pantries is appointed as the "keeper of the garden."

A Girl Scout troop added their contribution to the garden this week when they planted carrots alongside Murrieta City Council member Kelly Bennett.

Daisy Girl Scout Troop 1380 of Murrieta's Cole Canyon Elementary consists of 11 first graders. For many of them, it was their first experience with planting as well as experiencing community involvement, said Monica Tentman, a troop mother.

Tentman organized the effort, which fulfilled a merit badge for the girls.

"The last award on their journey was to protect a natural treasure in the community," Tentman said.

"This was a new experience for them, just knowing where the food goes."

The troop, which will bridge to Brownies this summer, plans to return to harvest the carrots.

Council member Bennett said the troop gave an excellent effort.

"The Girl Scout Daisy troop is an impressive group of first graders," Bennett said in an email Friday.

"The girls showed great interest in the garden, and got a hands-on lesson on how their efforts will directly provide healthy produce to their neighbors and our senior citizens. This enthusiastic group modeled just how easy and rewarding it is to "give back" to their community!"

There will be a planting at the garden tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. This season's keeper is the Murrieta United Methodist Church, which runs a food pantry.
