Chase Away the September Blues

The dreaded Sept. 1. Sometimes I experience something I call the "September Blues." That's when you suddenly realize that everything will be starting up again very soon.

I love summer! In fact, I love it so much that when Aug. 1 rolls around, I’m already depressed because I feel like summer is almost over.

I equate summer with rest--rest from the busyness of school, schedules, sports and many ministry commitments. I love to take the summer to rest, get refreshed, play hard, enjoy spontaneous activity and get re-focused.

Sept. 1 is right around the corner. The dreaded Sept. 1. And sometimes I experience something I call the “September Blues.”  That’s when you suddenly realize that everything will be starting up again very soon. School schedules, homework, and the beginning of all the things you took a summer break from.

When I even start to think about September, I get all flustered. I love the break of routine and rest that the summer season brings. But the Lord reminded me this morning that I don’t have to wait until next summer to find rest again. I need to practice resting in the Lord all the time. I say practice because I know how to do it; I just need to do it more!

I can rest when I’m busy. I can rest when I have a hectic schedule. I can rest in the midst of 100 activities if I’m finding my rest in the Lord. He can calm my heart and steady my path. He can put a peace in my heart when it’s full of anxiousness. Yes, rest can be found 12 months of the year, not only through the summer months.

How can we practice rest? By learning to put our trust in God and bringing our fears to Him. We rest when we find our comfort in Him. We practice rest by setting our hearts on Him and spending time with Him in the Word every day. Then, and only then, will we find the rest we so desperately need.

Let’s chase away those “September Blues.” If we let them, they’ll steal our joy! This month holds great and exciting things from the Lord. He has many new beginnings in store for us. Let’s remember that everyday is a gift from Him. Let’s redeem the time and use it wisely!

“This is the day which the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
