Congressman Supports Voter Say in Red-Light Camera Initiative

A local lawmaker expressed his support for a voter initiative regarding the red-light cameras in Murrieta in light of a seeking to remove it from the November ballot.

U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, wrote a letter Friday urging Riverside County Registrar of Voters Kari Verjil to defend voters' rights.

"As you know, the voter initiative process has a long and proud tradition in our form of government," Calvert wrote. "Any efforts to disenfranchise or limit the democratic rights of our citizens must not and can not be allowed to stand."

Calvert urged the Registrar, who is named alongside Murrieta City Clerk Kay Vinson in the lawsuit, to defend the people's right to vote on the measure.

"As is often the case, the citizens involved in the initiative process have limited resources at their disposal. Therefore, it is critical that the appropriate government agencies step forward and provide the necessary resources to defend the democratic rights of the citizens they serve."
