5 Things to Know In Murrieta: Jan. 28

Help out a neighboring city and drop off your unwanted items for the Goodwill drive for Wildomar Parks .

1. The is a high wind warning still in effect, according to the National Weather Service. Otherwise, today will be sunny with a high near 78. Tonight, expect clear skies with a low near 40. Winds could gust up to 35 mph; be careful if driving at high speeds or participating in any outdoor activities.

2. Head to Ryan’s Comics in Murrieta for its weekly Yu-Gi-Oh! Swiss Tournament. All participants will receive Turbo Packs equal to entry fee for Konami Sanctioned tournaments. Admission is $5; tournament times begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

3. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., kids can create a groundhog puppet at Lakeshore Learning Center. Located at 24420 Village Walk Place, the activity is free and materials will be provided. Get there early, as it is first come first serve

4. Community Cares is hosting a food drive for Animal Friends of the Valleys until Jan. 31. Any help is appreciated and donations from the local area can be picked up at your convenience. Alternatively, you can drop them off at 23952 or 23958 Via Madrid. If you would prefer to submit your donation directly to Animal Friends of the Valleys, you can do so by dropping them off or mailing your donation to 33751 Mission Trail, Wildomar, CA, 92595. Monetary donations would be gratefully appreciated but also needed are Dawn liquid detergent (not anti-bacterial) a pressure washer, Friskies kitten dry food (no red dyes) and crates or cages. For more information contact Barbara Nugent at 951-677-2430 or Megan Cusack at 951-704-6476.

5. Help out a neighboring city and off your unwanted items for the Goodwill drive for Wildomar Parks at Marna O'Brien, 20505 Palomar St. in Wildomar. Between 8 a.m. and noon, this is an effort to keep Marna O'Brien Park in Wildomar from being closed. All are asked to donate and drop off garage sale items to be sold to the nonprofit. Goodwill will pay volunteers $1,500 for each 28-foot trailer they can fill to the brim with stuff. The money raised will pay to keep the park's lights on, its grass mowed and cover other costs. Organizers hope to fill at least three trailers to raise $4,500, and it costs $56,000 a year to keep the park open. Residents are raising money to keep the park open because a ballot measure last year that asked Wildomar residents to pay $28 per year to keep the city's three parks open failed to gain enough support.Pick-up service for the fundraiser is available. Call 951-440-6796 or 951-837-4114 for information.
