UPDATE: Pilot Killed in Helicopter Crash Was Corona Man

Authorities have identified the pilot killed in a helicopter crash Monday near Lake Skinner.

Corona resident Carl Nurmi was piloting the helicopter that lost control when landing, according to a coroner's report.

The crash was reported at about 10:17 a.m. about one-third of a mile south of Borel Road on a hillside in a wildlife preserve in unincorporated Temecula, according to a sheriff's new release.

"Responding units located one survivor who was uninjured and one subject who was pronounced deceased at the crash site," wrote sheriff's Lt. Robert Moquin.

Nurmi, 61, was pronounced dead at 10:50 a.m.

Field officers with the Federal Aviation Administration were expected to remain on scene through the afternoon as the crash was investigated.

According to the tail number on the helicopter that was released by Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Lynn Lunsford, the Robinson R22 aircraft's registered owner is November Alpha LLC based out of Los Angeles.

The company provides the Robinson R22 helicopters for lease to flight schools, commercial operators and businesses, according to its website. Attempts to reach the company for comment were unsuccessful.

Nurmi also went by the first name of Johan, The Press-Enterprise reported.

Johan Nurmi held national and world records and was the vice president and owner of USA Academy of Aviation, a flight school based out of the French Valley Airport near Murrieta, according to USAacademy.com.

The coroner's office was not able to confirm the middle name Monday night and stated only that their records show the deceased as Carl Nurmi, age 61.

One person was confirmed dead Monday following a helicopter crash near Lake Skinner, according to authorities.

The crash was reported at 10:14 a.m. west of Borel Road and southwest of Lake Skinner, according to CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, whose crews were on scene.

The aircraft incident involved "a helicopter down in the Lake Skinner area with one confirmed fatality and one patient with minor injuries," Riverside County Fire spokesperson Jody Hagemann wrote in an online report.

According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Lynn Lunsford, the helicopter was an Robinson R22 that "crashed under unknown circumstances about three to four miles east of French Valley Airport."

In addition to county fire crews, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, FAA, American Medical Response and California Highway Patrol were on scene.

The Sheriff's Department has had the lead on the crash investigation this morning, but Deputy Albert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the FAA was taking over.

The crash did not involve a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department aircraft or other government-owned chopper, Martinez told Patch.

At press time, neither Lunsford nor Martinez released information on where the helicopter was based or where it was flying to.

According to the tail number on the helicopter that was released by Lunsford, the aircraft's registered owner is based out of Los Angeles.

FAA field officers had arrived to the investigate the crash shortly after 1 p.m.
